If you have an interest and passion for Music, this is an obvious choice for you. The range of skills Music A Level develops means it is an excellent course for all musicians to consider.

Music A level is widely acknowledged as an academic and challenging course, and is highly respected by universities.

As an A level student, you are expected to fully involve yourself in the life of the music department. There are many ensembles and activities for you to take part in. Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to perform as well as trips, visit & workshops.

Unit 1: Performing 30%

  • 8minute recital (continuous recording)

  • Photocopies of music must be submitted

  • Final mark out of 60

  • Assessed by Edexcel

 

Unit 2: Composing 30%

  • Assessed by Edexcel

  • Total of 60 marks available

Assessed on:

  • Creating & Developing ideas

  • Technical Control: creating moods

  • Expressive Control: writing for specific instruments

 

Unit 3: Appraising 40%

  • Written exam at end of Year 13

  • Duration 2 hours 10 minutes

  • Section A: Listening

  • Section B: Two essays

  • 100 marks available

Students are encouraged to participate in the many ensembles:

Concert Band, String Orchestra, Brass Band and more.

Unit 1: Performing

8-minute recital
Recorded in March of Year 13
Expected standard Grade 7
Assessed on technical control, accuracy &fluency, and stylistic awareness & expression.
 

Unit 2: Composing

Two compositions totalling 6 minutes
Demonstrate a control of musical elements, awareness of structure & ability to develop ideas.
Technical study – Chorale harmonisation
 

Unit 3: Appraising

Study set works from a range of styles:

Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Music for Film, Pop & Jazz, Fusions, New Directions
Learn to recognize musical features (form, texture, melody etc.)
Learn to write perceptively about the music
Complete dictation exercises
