French

If you are interested in languages and Francophone culture across the world, then French is an excellent choice for you! Learning a language develops many key skills such as communication, resilience and adaptability.

Studying French at A level will build on the foundations at GCSE to give you the confidence to speak and write French to a high level, you will also become confident in dealing with language in it’s written and spoken form from a variety of authentic sources, allowing you to reach your full potential as a linguist. Not only this, but studying French also encourages empathy, tolerance and an appreciation of global Francophone culture.

 

Theme 1: Social issues and trends. (La cyber société, la famille en voie de changement, le rôle du bénévolat, les aspects positifs d’une société diverse, quelle vie pour les marginalisés, comment on traite les criminels)

Theme 2: Political and artistic culture. (Une culture fière de son patrimoine, la musique francophone contemporaine, cinéma : le septième art, les ados, le droit de vote et l’engagement politique, manifestations et grèves – à qui le pouvoir, la politique et l’immigration)

Theme 3 – Grammar

Theme 4 – Literary texts and films (No et moi, Au revoir les enfants)

Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing. 2 hours and 30  minutes - 100 marks

  • Listening for gist and details, one question will require a summary

  • Reading and responding to stimulus texts (also one summary)

  • Translation of at least 100 words from French to English

  • Translation of at least 100 words from English to French

Paper 2: Writing. 2 hours - 80 marks

  • A choice of essay questions to answers - one essay on each literary text or film.

  • Approx. 300 words per essay but there is no limit

  • No dictionaries or copies of the texts are allowed

Paper 3: Speaking. 21 - 23 minutes including 5 minutes supervised preparation time.

  • Part 1 (5-6 minutes) – discussion of a theme based on a stimulus card (choice of two)

  • Part 2 – Individual research project completed by the student. Two minute presentation followed by a 9-10 minute discussion. This research project can be on any topic chosen by the student, linked with any aspect of Francophone countries or culture.
