If you are interested in languages and Hispanic culture across the world, then Spanish is an excellent choice for you! Learning a language develops many key skills such as communication, resilience and adaptability.

Studying Spanish at A level will build on the foundations at GCSE to give you the confidence to speak and write Spanish to a high level, you will also become confident in dealing with language in it’s written and spoken form from a variety of authentic sources, allowing you to reach your full potential as a linguist. Not only this, but studying Spanish also encourages empathy, tolerance and an appreciation of global Hispanic culture.

Theme 1: Social issues and trends

  • Los valores tradicionales y modernos

  • El ciberespacio

  • La igualdad de los sexos

  • La inmigración

Theme 2: Political and artistic culture

  • La influencia de los ídolos

  • La indentidad regional en España

  • El patrimonio cultural

  • Jóvenes de hoy, ciudadanos del mañana

  • Monarquías y dictaduras

  • Movimientos populares

Theme 3: Grammar

Theme 4: Literary texts and films

Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing.

  • 2 hours 30 minutes

  • 100 marks

  • Listening for gist and details, one question will require a summary

  • Reading and responding to stimulus texts (also one summary)

  • Translation of at least 100 words from Spanish to English

  • Translation of at least 100 words from English to Spanish

 

Paper 2: Writing

  • 2 hours

  • 80 marks

  • A choice of essay questions to answers

  • One essay on each literary text or film.

  • Approx. 300 words per essay but there is no limit

  • No dictionaries or copies of the texts are allowed

 

Paper 3: Speaking

  • 21 - 23 minutes including 5 minutes supervised preparation time.

  • Part 1 (5-6 minutes) – discussion of a theme based on a stimulus card (choice of two)

  • Part 2 – Individual research project completed by the student. Two minute presentation followed by a 9-10 minute discussion. This research project can be on any topic chosen by the student, linked with any aspect of Hispanic countries or culture.
