Biology

A-Level Biology builds on and develops key skills needed for success in science. These include:

  • Numeracy skills – for data handling, calculations, and statistical analysis.

  • Chemical understanding – to support the biochemistry aspects of the course.

  • Analytical thinking – to interpret data and apply biological ideas to new situations

Year 12

Module 1 – Development of practical skills 

Module 2 – Foundations in Biology. 

Module 3 – Exchange and transport. 

Module 4 – Biodiversity, evolution, and disease 

Year 13 

Module 1 – Development of practical skills 

Module 5 – Communication, homeostasis, and energy 

Module 6 – Genetics, evolution, and ecosystems

Component 1: Biological Processes – 37% (100 marks, 2 hour 15 minutes written paper)

Assesses content from modules 1, 2, 3 and 5.

Component 2: Biological Diversity – 37%(100 marks, 2 hour 15 minutes written paper)

Assesses content from modules 1, 2, 4 and 6.

Component 3: Unified Biology – 26% (70 marks, 1 hour 30 minutes written paper)

Assesses content from all modules.

Component 4: Practical Endorsement in Biology (Non exam assessment)

The Practical Endorsement in Biology will be graded Pass or Fail. The students complete and keep record of assessed practical tasks they do in lessons throughout the two years.

To help you explore Biology beyond the classroom, a wide range of enrichment resources are available, including a curated reading list, recommended podcasts, and suggested YouTube channels. Throughout Years 12 and 13, you can also take part in exciting Biology outreach programmes run by Cambridge University, as well as a variety of competitions. These experiences provide excellent opportunities to challenge yourself, demonstrate your academic curiosity, and enhance your future university or apprenticeship applications.
